Retail & Merch Volunteer Assistant – The Church Studio
Part-Time Volunteer Position | Reports to: Retail Manager or Volunteer Coordinator

Position Overview:
Retail & Merch Volunteer Assistants play a vital role in supporting the guest shopping experience. By assisting with day-to-day retail operations, these volunteers help ensure a welcoming, organized, and engaging shopping environment for our guests. 

Key Responsibilities:
Volunteers may assist with any of the following retail duties:

• Cashier
  Operate Shopify, our point-of-sale system, to process purchases accurately and efficiently. Greet customers, answer questions, and provide friendly service that enhances their experience at The Church Studio.

• Inventory Control
  Assist with inventory counts, stock rotation, and restocking of merchandise. Help track product levels and report low or missing items to staff.

• Merchandising
  Maintain the appearance and layout of retail displays by:

  • Facing and organizing products neatly

  • Folding/rolling apparel with shirt folder to make everything uniform on shelves

  • Keeping the storage closet organized for easy access to clothing items 

  • Applying or updating size labels

  • Creating an inviting, visually appealing retail space

  • Keeping the sales bin organized and making it easily accessible

  • Applying labels to extra inventory in cabinets

Qualifications:

• Friendly and professional attitude

• Attention to detail and pride in presentation

• Comfortable using or learning Shopify/point-of-sale (POS) system

• Ability to take direction and work independently or as part of a team

• Retail or customer service experience is a plus, but not required

Time Commitment:
Flexible, based on store hours and event needs. Volunteers can sign up for shifts that fit their availability anytime between 10am-3pm.

Training Provided:
Volunteers will receive training on retail procedures, POS systems, and merchandising best practices to ensure confidence and consistency in their role.

Merch Volunteers directly contribute to The Church Studio’s mission to support, educate, and inspire through a professional recording environment, public programs, and interpretive exhibits.

• Support:
  By managing merchandise displays, assisting customers, and processing purchases, merch volunteers help generate vital funds that support our nonprofit programs, recording scholarships, and artist development opportunities. Selling memberships further strengthens our community by connecting guests to the ongoing mission of The Church Studio.

• Educate:
  Merch volunteers are often the first to inform visitors about the meaning behind our merchandise, the legacy of The Church Studio, and the benefits of membership. By sharing this knowledge and answering questions, they help guests better understand and appreciate the history and impact of the studio.

• Inspire:
  Through thoughtful customer service, a warm welcome, and well-curated displays, merch volunteers create an inspiring shopping experience that celebrates music, history, and creativity. Encouraging guests to join as members helps them feel more connected and inspired to be part of something meaningful.
